CONUS vs. OCONUS Shipping
CONUS (Continental U.S.) Moves
For moves within the continental United States, vehicle shipping works the same as any standard auto transport — open or enclosed carriers, door-to-door delivery, and typical transit times of 3–10 days depending on distance. Many military members choose private auto transport for CONUS moves because it's fast, convenient, and doesn't require them to drive cross-country during an already hectic relocation.

OCONUS (Outside Continental U.S.) Moves
For overseas assignments (Germany, Japan, Hawaii, Korea, Guam, etc.), vehicle shipping is typically handled through the military's Vehicle Processing Centers (VPCs). You'll drop your vehicle at a designated VPC, and it will be shipped by ocean freight to your destination.
Key OCONUS details:
- Not all vehicles are eligible for OCONUS shipping — size and emissions restrictions apply in some countries
- Transit times for overseas shipping range from 3 to 8 weeks depending on the destination
- You may need to get your vehicle to a VPC that's not near your current base — that's where private transport comes in

Tips for Military Auto Transport

- Remove personal items. Carriers aren't licensed to transport household goods. Ship the car empty to avoid issues at pickup.
- Inspect the vehicle. Do a thorough condition inspection with dated photos before handing over the vehicle, whether to a private carrier or VPC. Note everything on the Bill of Lading.
- Coordinate with your sponsor. If moving to a new base, your sponsor or gaining unit can often help with local logistics on the delivery end.
