The auto transport industry has a reputation problem — and it's earned. There are legitimate brokers and carriers out there, and there are companies that exist to take your deposit and disappear. Here's how to tell the difference.
The Lowball Quote Scam
This is the most common scam in the industry.
Here's how it works: a company quotes you $400 to ship your car cross-country. You book, pay a deposit, and nothing happens. Your pickup date passes. When you call, they tell you they couldn't find a carrier at that price — but they can get one for $900. Your deposit is locked up. You're stuck.
The red flag: A quote that's 20–30% lower than everything else you received. Real market rates are real market rates. Carriers charge what the market pays. A wildly low quote is not a deal — it's a placeholder to capture your booking.
How to protect yourself: Get 3–5 quotes from different companies. When one is dramatically lower, ask how they plan to fulfill it. If they can't give you a clear answer, walk away.
The Deposit Lock-In
Some companies charge a deposit to "lock in" your rate — and then make it difficult or impossible to get back.
The red flag: Non-refundable deposits, unclear cancellation policies, high deposits ($200+) before your vehicle is even assigned.
Freedom Auto Transport's policy: We don't charge anything until your vehicle is picked up and assigned to a carrier. No upfront deposit. If something changes on your end before pickup, you owe nothing.
The Bait-and-Switch at Pickup
You booked open transport. The driver shows up and says there's a problem — your vehicle doesn't fit on the open carrier, there's "additional weight," or the route changed. He can get you on an enclosed carrier for an extra $400. Right now.
This is a pressure tactic. It happens most often when you're in a time crunch (you already moved out, your flight leaves tomorrow).
How to protect yourself: Book with a company that locks in your price in writing. Get a written contract before your pickup date. If a driver tries to change the price at pickup, you have the right to refuse and contact your broker.
Ghost Broker Companies
Some "companies" are website fronts that collect deposits, dispatch you to unvetted carriers, and then disappear when something goes wrong.
Red flags:
- No physical address
- No USDOT or MC number listed
- No verifiable customer reviews on Google, BBB, or Transport Reviews
- Representative can only be reached by email
How to verify: Every legitimate carrier and broker must be registered with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Look them up at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Search by USDOT or MC number.
Freedom Auto Transport is fully licensed and registered. Our credentials are available on request.
The Missing Insurance Claim
Your vehicle arrives damaged. You file a claim. The company stonewalls, delays, or claims the damage was pre-existing.
How to protect yourself: The Bill of Lading is your protection. It documents the condition of your vehicle at pickup. At delivery, document any new damage before signing. If the delivery report doesn't note the damage, your claim has no foundation.
We've covered this in detail in our What to Expect at Pickup and Delivery guide.
How to Choose a Safe Auto Transport Company
Use this checklist before booking with anyone:
- FMCSA-registered broker or carrier (verify at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov)
- Verified reviews on Google, BBB, or Transport Reviews
- Clear, written contract before pickup
- No money collected until vehicle is picked up and assigned
- Real phone number with a person who answers
- Transparent insurance policy with disclosed limits
Freedom Auto Transport meets every item on that list. We've been in business moving vehicles for customers across the country, and our customers' reviews reflect that.
