How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car from New York to Ohio?

  • Distance212 - 659 miles
  • Estimated cost$390 – $640
  • Transit time1 to 2 days
  • Pickup1–3 business days

Most New York to Ohio quotes land between an estimated $390 and $640. Where the car starts in New York and where it ends up in Ohio decide the number, along with the vehicle type and the pickup date. Upstate New York cars are closer to Ohio than those from the New York City area, so they tend to cost less.

Examples from our route pages:

  • Rochester to Columbus (395 miles): $359–$514
  • Buffalo to Cincinnati (432 miles): $375–$536
  • New York to Columbus (533 miles): $422–$602
  • New York to Dayton (626 miles): $464–$664

Pickups and SUVs cost more than a sedan, and inoperable cars have an extra fee. If you have a flexible pickup window, say so; it can help a driver fit your car into the schedule.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car from New York to Ohio?

Every New York to Ohio route we list takes 1–2 days in transit. Pickup is separate and usually happens within 1–3 business days after you book.

  • Starting point. A car leaving Buffalo is already on the Ohio side of the state, while one starting in Yonkers or New York City needs a full day to cross Pennsylvania.
  • Ohio destination. Toledo and Cleveland are up in the north, Columbus is in the middle and Cincinnati and Dayton are in the southwest, which is the longest drive.
  • Weather. Snow squalls off the Great Lakes, mainly from late autumn to early spring, can slow trucks leaving Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

Pickup is usually scheduled within a 1–3 business day window after booking; transit then takes about 1 to 2 days.

Shipping a Car from New York to Ohio: Route Notes

Out of the New York City area, trucks typically travel west across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, picking up I-80 for the long run toward Ohio. Entering Ohio on I-80 or the Ohio Turnpike puts drivers on the northern side of the state, where they can continue to Cleveland, Akron and Toledo, or turn south toward Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati.

Cars from Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse run the other way around: I-90 follows the lake southwest to Pennsylvania and then Ohio, and at Cleveland the truck can go on west to Toledo or south to Columbus.

Movement is fairly even all year. College move-ins in late summer and job relocations make that season a little busier, while deep winter is the time to allow some extra days.

Open vs Enclosed Car Shipping from New York to Ohio

Most New York to Ohio cars ride on an open carrier, which is the usual choice for a trip of this length. If you are moving a vintage car or want extra protection from road salt in winter, enclosed transport is an option. Book earlier, since fewer enclosed trucks run this lane.

“Freedom was great, Dan S. with Freedom was the only carrier who could deliver on the dates I needed. I contacted several transporters, the prices and dates changed every 5 minutes. Dan was very helpful every step of the way, and extremely reasonable! I will use these guys from this point forward, make one call and it’s a done deal! Thanks Dan!”

Freedom Auto Transport runs a solid operation. Dorian is the reason I chose this carrier even though I had all but agreed to work with a different hauler. He was fast to return my calls, texted frequently, and used all his contacts to arrange a quick turnaround on the 4Runner I shipped. He almost managed to get a same day pick-up but the dealership I was working with couldn’t complete the paperwork in time for an evening pick up. Easy paperwork/signatures. No heavy sales pitch. Just familiarity with how the industry works, good relationships to leverage, and the urgency to help. I think he really feels good knowing he’s helping to deliver something meaningful to others. Ive used different companies each time I’ve shipped a vehicle but the next time I need a car or truck shipped, I want to work with Dorian. Cheers!
